It was an atmosphere buzzing with focus and determination as thirty of the Fort Mill School District’s sharpest spellers gathered for a milestone event. In what many attendees described as an “un-BEEEEE-lievable” display of academic talent, students from the district’s six middle schools competed in the 22nd annual FMSD Spelling Bee.
While the competition was fierce, one student rose to the top through poise and precision. Soham Sahu, a student at Pleasant Knoll Middle School, clinched the championship title by confidently navigating the final word of the evening: “cavalcade.”
More Than Just Letters
The event was spearheaded by Morey Reinblatt, the Middle and Secondary ELA Coordinator for the Fort Mill School District. For Reinblatt, the spelling bee is less about the technicality of the dictionary and more about the growth of the individual.
“We put this together because we want to celebrate these students who’ve worked so hard,” Reinblatt shared. “More than anything else, it’s about celebrating the students and giving those families an opportunity to come in and cheer on their students in a setting they might not normally have.”
Reinblatt emphasized that mastering spelling is a vital skill that empowers students for future success, but noted that the heart of the event is the community. “I really do believe that at the end of the day, none of the other work matters if it’s not about the kids.”
Road to the Regionals
Sahu’s victory marks the beginning of a larger journey. He, along with the other four top finalists, will represent the Fort Mill School District on a much larger stage. These elite five are set to showcase their linguistic talents at the regional spelling bee held at Bank of America Stadium.
