Fort Mill girls end 20-year drought, boys rally to sweep Northwestern in 5A playoffs

Fort Mill’s Vivian Bunting passes to Ava Shave in their team’s playoff victory Monday evening over Northwestern in round 1 of the SCHSL 5A-D2 playoffs.

History and a dominant defense took center stage Monday night as the Fort Mill girls basketball team secured its first postseason victory in at least two decades, dismantling Northwestern 61-15 in the opening round of the SCHSL Class 5A Division II state championships.

The No. 5 seed Yellow Jackets left little doubt from the opening tip, stifling the No. 12 seed Trojans with a defensive performance that allowed just 15 points over four quarters. The win marks a significant milestone for a program that had not tasted playoff success since at least 2006.

Fort Mill now advances to the second round, where they will face Eastside on Saturday, Feb. 21.

The atmosphere remained electric for the second game of the twin bill, though the Fort Mill boys had to work much harder to complete the sweep of their Rock Hill rivals.

The Yellow Jackets trailed 28-24 at halftime as the visiting Trojans found success from the perimeter. However, Fort Mill’s defense tightened in the second half, allowing the Jackets to claw back for a 53-48 comeback victory.

With the win, the Fort Mill boys move on to the second round of the 5A-D2 playoffs. They are scheduled to travel to T.L. Hanna this Friday.
