An inmate at the York County Detention Center died Saturday after suffering a medical emergency, according to information released by detention center officials and reported by WSOC.
The incident occurred shortly after 4:50 p.m. Saturday when the inmate collapsed in the shower. Other inmates quickly alerted detention center staff, who immediately responded to find the man unresponsive. Officers began life-saving measures right away.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived approximately 10 minutes later and continued efforts to revive the man. He was then transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:16 p.m.
The death of the male inmate, who had been in custody since January 30, is now under investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). The inmate’s identity is being withheld pending the completion of the investigation.
