3-3 Gamecocks Hosts No. 14 Oklahoma, Post Season Implications on the Line

The No. 14 Oklahoma Sooners will try to put their first loss of the season behind them Saturday as they visit Williams-Brice Stadium to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks in an important mid-season Southeastern Conference battle.

For the Sooners (5-1, 1-1 SEC), the 12:45 p.m. ET kickoff offers a chance to recover from last week’s disappointing Red River Rivalry loss to rival Texas. For the Gamecocks (3-3, 1-3 SEC), a victory against a ranked opponent is essential to reach bowl eligibility and improve their standing in a stacked conference.

Oklahoma enters the game ranked ninth in the SEC standings, but boasts one of the most suffocating defenses in the country, allowing just 9.8 points per game, the second-best mark nationally. The Sooners have excelled at rushing defense, giving up an average of only 84.8 yards per game on the ground.

South Carolina, meanwhile, is near the bottom of the SEC table, fighting for traction with a 1-3 conference record. The Gamecocks offense has sputtered, averaging just 22.3 points per contest, which ranks outside the top 100 in FBS.

Key Matchup

The most critical factor will be the clash between the Oklahoma defense and the Gamecocks’ redshirt sophomore quarterback LaNorris Sellers.

Sellers has passed for 1,010 yards this season, but the Gamecocks lack consistent offensive production (averaging just 310 total yards per game). To move the ball, South Carolina will likely rely on Sellers’ mobility and the big-play ability of wide receiver Nyck Harbor, who averages 19.7 yards per catch.

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer (1,417 yards passing, 6 TDs, 6 INTs) will face a Gamecocks defense that has managed to keep opponents’ passing numbers in check, allowing less than 193 yards through the air.

This game marks a critical inflection point for both programs as they head into the back half of the SEC schedule.
