How long have you lived in Tega Cay? I have lived here almost 3 years, my wife 13 years

What do you believe is the role of the City Council in our community?
I believe the role of the City Council is to serve as responsible stewards of the community’s resources, values, and future. Our job is not to push personal agendas, but to listen to residents, weigh the facts, and make decisions that protect Tega Cay’s character while preparing us for the challenges ahead.

The Council should provide fiscal oversight, ensure that growth is managed responsibly, and set policies that keep our city safe, family-oriented, and financially strong. It is also the Council’s duty to work with state and county partners to improve infrastructure and services that impact our daily lives.

Above all, City Council members must lead with integrity, transparency, and accountability—always remembering that every decision we make must be in the best interest of the people who call Tega Cay home.

What skills and experience do you have that you believe would be beneficial to you as a Council member?
I bring a mix of leadership, problem-solving, and people skills that I believe would serve Tega Cay well. Throughout my 30 years in executive roles, I’ve led teams through complex challenges — always focused on finding practical, balanced solutions. I’m skilled at bringing people together, even when opinions differ, and helping turn debate into progress.

I also have strong financial awareness, having managed large budgets and long-term plans, which is critical as our city faces important growth and funding decisions. And while I take the responsibility seriously, I also believe leadership should come with a sense of humor — it helps keep perspective, build trust, and remind us that we’re all neighbors working toward the same goal: keeping Tega Cay the great community we’re proud to call home.

What previous community involvement have you had in Tega Cay or another city?
Community involvement has always been a big part of my life. Earlier in my career, I ran for State Senate, driven by a passion for public service and making a difference in people’s lives. I’ve served on the Youth Sports Committee in Chandler, Arizona, helping shape programs that give kids opportunities to grow through sports. Here in Tega Cay, I’m an active member of the Arts Council, supporting local creativity and culture, and a board member for a Youth Camp, helping provide positive experiences and mentorship for young people.

Along with decades of business leadership, these experiences have deepened my understanding of how communities thrive — when people step up, work together, and give back. That’s the same spirit I want to bring to serving Tega Cay as Mayor.

What do you see as top priorities for the City and why?
Tega Cay is a special place, and my top priorities center on keeping our city strong, safe, and connected. First, we must strengthen our financial foundation by attracting more local and commercial businesses. Expanding our business tax base will help fund essential services and reduce the burden on residents.

Second, I want to continue investing in public safety — ensuring our police, fire, and first responders have the resources they need to protect our community.

Lastly, I believe in fostering community engagement and recreation, supporting the parks, events, and programs that bring our residents together and make Tega Cay such a great place to live. My goal is to preserve our hometown feel while building a strong foundation for the future.

Have you previously served on a governing board of any type (business, government, non-profit organization, church, etc.) or as a leader in any organization? If so, please briefly describe the organization(s), your role, and the number of years you served in that capacity below.
Yes. I’ve held executive leadership positions for more than 30 years, leading teams, managing complex projects, and overseeing multi-million-dollar budgets. These roles required collaboration, accountability, and sound decision making — all skills that directly apply to serving effectively in city government.

What do you believe are the three (3) greatest strengths of the City of Tega Cay?
1. Strong Sense of Community & Safety
2. Natural Beauty & Recreation
3. High-Quality Schools & Family-Friendly Environment

Does your interest in serving on the City Council stem from a personal interest or
goal? Is there something in particular you hope to accomplish while serving on the City Council, and why is serving on the Council important to you? Please elaborate.

I grew up in a small town where my dad was the police chief, and from a young age I saw the impact that honest, caring public service can have on people’s lives. By the age of 14, I knew I wanted to be a mayor one day — someone who listens, brings people together, and helps shape a better future for their hometown.

Tega Cay has that same small-town spirit I grew up with — neighbors who care, kids playing in the streets, and a shared pride in our community. I want to protect that while guiding us thoughtfully through the financial challenges ahead. Serving as Mayor isn’t about politics for me — it’s about continuing a lifelong commitment to serve others and ensure Tega Cay remains the place we’re all proud to call home

Please list any areas you believe the City of Tega Cay could improve upon:
As proud as I am of our community, there are clear areas where we can and must improve. First, growth and development need to be managed more responsibly. We can’t allow unchecked residential expansion to outpace our infrastructure and budget. My focus would be on attracting more commercial investment to diversify our tax base, reduce the burden on homeowners, and ensure we grow in a way that protects our small-town charm.

Second, we need to get ahead of our traffic and infrastructure challenges. Anyone driving on Highway 160 or Gold Hill knows how strained our roads have become. I will be an advocate for stronger partnerships with York County and the State to push for road improvements, safer intersections, and expanded options for pedestrians and families.

Third, we should continue investing in parks, recreation, and community amenities. Tega Cay’s quality of life is built around our lake, trails, and family programs. But as our population grows, so must our recreational facilities and community events. This is how we preserve the spirit of Tega Cay while making it even more welcoming for future generations.

At the core, my approach is about balance: protecting what makes Tega Cay special while making the practical investments needed to prepare for the future.

The City Council must render decisions regarding the implementation of policies and/or programs that may be somewhat difficult. Are you willing to take on the responsibility of making decisions that are in the best interest of the public even though they may be somewhat difficult?
Yes. Leadership means making tough decisions — not always the most popular ones, but the right ones for the long-term well-being of our community. Throughout my career, I’ve had to make difficult choices by listening carefully, evaluating facts, and keeping the greater good in mind.

As Mayor, I will do the same — lead with fairness, integrity, and transparency. I’ll always listen to our residents, explain the “why” behind decisions, and make choices that keep Tega Cay strong, safe, and financially sound for years to come.

What do you believe is the single most compelling issue facing the City of Tega Cay?
The most pressing issue facing Tega Cay is containing growth and the financial stability of our city. If we continue to grow without balance, we risk facing a budget deficit within just a few years, straining our infrastructure and overburdening our schools and roads, and. We cannot let residential development alone drive our future.

As Mayor, I would focus on attracting more commercial business to diversify our tax base. This is not only fiscally conservative but essential to protecting homeowners from higher taxes. At the same time, we must preserve the small-town character that drew us all here—our lake, our community spirit, and our quality of life.

Please tell us about any other activities, specialized skills, knowledge, or professional experience that would contribute to your effectiveness in serving on the City Council.
As a business leader for over 30 years, I’ve managed teams, budgets, and major initiatives — always focused on results and accountability. Those same skills are what I’ll bring to serving Tega Cay.

I’ve also been active in our community, coaching youth soccer and supporting local programs that make our city special. I believe in listening, finding common ground, and getting things done. My goal is to apply real-world experience, fiscal discipline, and a collaborative spirit to keep Tega Cay thriving — while protecting the small-town charm we all love.

Many are concerned about the growth within Tega Cay. What’s your plan to help ensure we maintain a small town feel while continuing to grow appropriately?
Tega Cay has reached a point where no additional residential development is needed. Our focus now must be on improving infrastructure — roads, traffic flow, and city services — to support the residents who are already here.

At the same time, we need to attract more commercial businesses to strengthen our city’s financial foundation and reduce the tax burden on homeowners. That’s an area I’m particularly experienced in — working with businesses, building partnerships, and creating win-win opportunities that bring value to the community. My goal is to ensure Tega Cay grows stronger, not just larger.

Is there anything you’d want to tell us about yourself and why the people of Tega Cay should vote for you?
In 1998, I arrived to this great country from the Netherlands with a degree and little work experience. Through hard work, determination, and a little luck, America has given me opportunities beyond what I could have imagined. On November 9, 2007, one of the proudest moments of my life, I raised my hand, pledged allegiance to our Constitution, and became a United States citizen.

Now, I want to give back all that I’ve learned — to use my experience to serve the community my family and I love. Tega Cay is our home, and I hope voters will trust me with their vote so I can earn their respect and be fully committed to the continued success of our city and its people.

To end all the seriousness with some fun facts about me:
– Disco King of Holland,
– Soccer Semi-Pro in Europe.
– World Champion Mud Sledding,
– Judo black belt holder at the age of 16
