COLUMBIA, S.C. — An electric night atmosphere is building at Williams-Brice Stadium as South Carolina prepares to host Kentucky, with both teams desperate to reverse early-season conference slides.
The Gamecocks (2-2, 0-2 SEC) and the Wildcats (2-1, 0-1) are set for a 7:45 p.m. kickoff on the SEC Network, but the drama began long before the coin toss in this crucial Southeastern Conference battle.
Under fourth-year coach Shane Beamer, South Carolina is looking to snap a two-game skid that has seen them drop their first two conference matchups for the first time since last season. The Gamecocks are leaning heavily on their special teams, which have been a major weapon this year.
Special teams ace Vicari Swain leads the country with three punt returns for touchdowns, and the unit overall ranks fifth in the nation in punt return average.
Quarterback LaNorris Sellers and the Gamecocks offense face a stiff test in finding rhythm against a Kentucky team that is also looking to jump-start its SEC campaign. The Wildcats will be led by freshman quarterback Cutter Boley, making his first career SEC road start in one of the league’s most challenging environments.
The game will be televised on the SEC Network with Tom Hart, former Vanderbilt quarterback Jordan Rodgers, and Cole Cubelic on the call. The Gamecock Sports Radio Network features Hall of Fame quarterbacks Todd Ellis and Tommy Suggs.
