The Northwestern Trojans proved why they are a regional contender on Friday night, using a stifling second-half defensive performance to shut out the Nation Ford Falcons in a 75-21 rout. Just down the road, the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets suffered their first loss of the season in a nail-biting defeat to Catawba Ridge.
Nation Ford (3-2, 0-1) came out of the gate with an aggressive offensive attack, but the Trojans’ (4-1, 1-0) offensive firepower was too much to overcome. The first half was a back-and-forth shootout, with the teams combining for 60 points in the opening quarter alone. Nation Ford struck first with a 20-yard passing touchdown from Kason Canupp to Jayden Scott, followed by a two-point conversion to Ja’Mari Gore for an 8-0 lead.
Northwestern quickly responded with a rushing touchdown from Nigel Smith. The teams traded blows for the rest of the half, with Smith adding another rushing score and Kameron Vance returning a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. Nation Ford’s Canupp and Scott connected for an 80-yard touchdown pass to keep the Falcons in the game early. However, a late-half surge, capped by a 24-yard field goal by Alex Bendt, gave Northwestern a commanding 39-21 halftime lead.
The second half was a different story entirely. The Trojans’ defense locked down the Falcons, holding them scoreless for the final two quarters. Northwestern’s offense continued to pour it on, adding 36 more points to cement the victory and start their conference season on the right foot.
Meanwhile, just a few miles away, the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets (4-1, 0-1) found themselves in a defensive struggle against rival Catawba Ridge. The Yellow Jackets got off to a strong start, taking a 3-0 lead on a 52-yard field goal from Noah Hardy. Quarterback Quinn Kelly then connected with Josiah McKinzie for a 20-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 10-0.
Catawba Ridge battled back, with a 12-yard rushing touchdown from Will Griggs cutting the lead to 10-7 by halftime. The second half remained a tight, low-scoring affair, with neither team able to pull away. Fort Mill ultimately fell in the closely contested game, suffering their first loss of the season.
In other regional action, Rock Hill defeated Clover 35-34 in a high-scoring thriller, while Indian Land remained undefeated with a non-conference victory over Parkwood. The Yellow Jackets and Falcons both find themselves at 0-1 in conference play heading into the heart of their schedules.
