Fresh off a dramatic 27-23 loss to rival South Pointe, the reigning state champion Northwestern Trojans will look to rebound as they face the Nation Ford Falcons this Friday. The Trojans, who entered the contest undefeated, suffered their first loss of the season after a late-game comeback by the Stallions, highlighted by a go-ahead touchdown pass in the final minute. After clinching their sixth state title last season and a perfect start to 2025, the Trojans now have something to prove, and the Falcons may be the unfortunate victims of Northwestern’s renewed determination.

A matchup of contrasting styles will be on display Friday night at Nation Ford. Ranked second in the state, Northwestern brings a potent passing attack and high-octane offense, while the Falcons will counter with a formidable rushing game.

Northwestern (3-1) has put up impressive numbers this season, scoring an average of 39 points per game. Quarterback Xavier Means has been a key driver of their success, averaging 191.5 passing yards per game, while senior wide receiver Kameron Vance has been a top target, averaging 110 receiving yards and 12 points per game. Their defense has been solid, but they’ve given up 93 points through four games, a statistic Nation Ford (3-1) hopes to exploit.

The 3-1 Falcons are led by a dual-threat playmaker in Kason Canupp. The quarterback has been a one-man wrecking crew, averaging a remarkable 440 total yards per game, split between 108.5 rushing yards and 331.5 passing yards. His primary target, Jayden Scott, is averaging 179.5 receiving yards per game, making the duo a major threat to any defense. They’ll need support from a running game that’s only averaging 106 yards per game. Nation Ford’s defense, anchored by sophomore linebacker Logan Thames with 10.5 tackles per game, has been effective in limiting opponents. Like Northwestern, though, they are having trouble stopping the opponent and have allowed 85 points across four games.

The game may come down to whether Nation Ford’s balanced attack can keep pace with Northwestern’s explosive offense. The Trojans will need to contain Canupp and his favorite target, while the Falcons will have to find a way to slow down Northwestern’s prolific scoring. Both teams have shown they can put up points, but only one will walk away with a victory.
