As the calendar flips to mid-September, the AAAAA Region 3 football season is kicking off, with several teams looking to build on strong starts and others aiming to reverse early-season trends. The seven schools in the region are poised for a series of high-stakes matchups that will begin to define the race for a playoff spot.

INDIAN LAND

The Warriors (3-0) are off to a blistering start, steamrolling opponents with a potent offense that has averaged nearly 40 points per game. Their defense has been equally impressive, holding opposing teams to a mere 13 total points. Indian Land’s region slate doesn’t begin for another week, giving them one final non-conference tune-up at home against Parkwood. The Warriors will look to maintain their momentum before a critical Week 5 clash with Rock Hill.

FORT MILL

The Yellow Jackets (4-0) are enjoying their best start in decades and face their first major test this week. They travel to face a strong Catawba Ridge team (3-1) in a highly anticipated game. Fort Mill’s offense has been explosive, putting up 158 points through four games, while their defense has been solid. The combined scoring average of the two teams, 269 points, suggests this could be a high-flying affair.

CATAWBA RIDGE

The Copperheads (3-1) have won their last two games and are ready to host the undefeated Fort Mill Yellow Jackets. The game is being billed as a shootout, with both offenses putting up big numbers this season. Catawba Ridge’s balanced attack will be put to the test against a Fort Mill squad that has shown it can win in various ways. This contest will be a litmus test for both programs as they begin their push for a region title.

CLOVER

The Blue Eagles (3-1) have won three straight and will travel to Rock Hill this week to begin region play. Their offense has been a juggernaut, averaging more than five touchdowns per game. They’ll face a Rock Hill defense that has struggled at times, which could make for a long night for the Bearcats as Clover looks to continue its offensive dominance.

NATION FORD

The Falcons (3-1) are another local team enjoying their best start in recent memory. They will host a formidable opponent in Northwestern, who will be looking to bounce back from a Week 4 home loss. Nation Ford appears to be the more balanced team and will seek to exploit what has been a porous Northwestern defense that has given up an average of 24 points per game.

NORTHWESTERN

The reigning 2024 state champions (3-1) are coming off a tough home loss to South Pointe and are eager to prove a point as they begin region play at Nation Ford. While the offense remains dominant, the defense has been a concern, allowing opponents to score with relative ease. The Wildcats will need to tighten things up on that side of the ball to defend their title and get their region campaign started on the right foot.

ROCK HILL

The Bearcats (2-2) are sitting at .500 and face a daunting challenge at home this week against a high-powered Clover offense. The Bearcats’ defense has given up 113 points in four games, and they will need to find a way to slow down the Blue Eagles if they want to earn a much-needed win to kick off their conference schedule.
