Catawba Ridge High School used a strong fourth-quarter performance to seal a 24-3 victory over Spring Valley High School Thursday night.
The Copperheads entered the final quarter with a narrow 10-3 lead before breaking the game open with a pair of touchdowns. The first was a rushing touchdown from inside the red zone, extending the lead to 16-3, followed by a successful point-after attempt to make it 17-3.
The decisive play came late in the quarter when the Catawba Ridge defense scored a pick-6, an interception returned for a touchdown, to put the game out of reach. Another successful point-after attempt pushed the final score to 24-3.
The defense held Spring Valley’s offense in check for the entire fourth quarter, preventing a late comeback and ensuring the victory.
With the win, the Copperheads improve to 3-1 and open up conference play next Friday when they host cross-town rival — and currently undefeated — Fort Mill High School.
