Kason Canupp connected with Asher Beck for a last-minute touchdown, completing a stunning fourth-quarter comeback as the Nation Ford Falcons defeated the River Bluff Gators 20-17 in a non-conference matchup Friday night.
Nation Ford (2-1) trailed for most of the game, including a 17-14 deficit heading into the final frame. The Falcons’ defense stood tall when it mattered most, forcing a turnover on downs with just over a minute remaining to give the offense a chance from their own 38-yard line.
River Bluff (1-2) had controlled the tempo early, scoring on a rushing touchdown just five minutes into the game and converting the extra point to take a 7-0 lead. After a missed Nation Ford field goal, the Gators looked poised to extend their lead, but Nation Ford’s Micah Gadsden intercepted a pass at the end of the first quarter, giving his team a spark.
The Falcons capitalized on the momentum, with Patience Andrews punching in a 3-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter. However, the Gators responded quickly with a touchdown pass and a field goal, taking a 17-7 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Nation Ford began its slow climb back. An early rushing touchdown followed by a successful extra point cut the lead to 17-14. Later in the third quarter, Nigel Johnson’s interception gave the Falcons a crucial possession, though they were unable to convert it into points.
With time winding down, Nation Ford took over possession near midfield. Canupp marched the team down the field with a series of quick completions, culminating in the 24-yard touchdown pass to Beck with less than a minute left on the clock. Although the extra point was missed, the score gave the Falcons their first lead of the night.
River Bluff’s final drive stalled out, securing the improbable victory for Nation Ford. The Falcons will look to carry this momentum into their next game when they travel to Richland Northeast on Thursday, Sept. 11.
