FORT MILL, S.C. — As students head back to class, the Humane Society of York County (HSYC) is hoping two of its furry residents will also find a new beginning—with loving families to call their own.
This week’s Cat of the Week is Coffee Cake, a calm and affectionate tabby who has been at the shelter for over a year. Estimated to be around 4.5 years old, Coffee Cake came to HSYC as a stray and is described as a laid-back companion who knows what she likes. She prefers to be the only cat in a quiet home where she can enjoy plenty of attention—on her terms. She is fully vetted and ready for adoption.
HSYC’s Dog of the Week is Ellie May, a 5-month-old pup who came to the rescue as an owner surrender. Playful, smart, and social with other dogs when introduced properly, Ellie May is expected to grow to about 45 pounds. Shelter staff say she’s thriving in rescue life but is eager to find her forever family. Like Coffee Cake, she is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and ready to meet potential adopters.
In addition to highlighting adoptable pets, HSYC is sounding the alarm on the ongoing kitten boom and is actively seeking foster homes for both kittens and dogs. Fostering gives animals the opportunity to grow in a safe environment while freeing up space at the shelter.
The nonprofit is also preparing for its annual Christmas Store fundraiser and is currently seeking a location—ideally the former Kimbrell building again. Community members with a space to donate or lease are encouraged to reach out.
Other ongoing needs include:
- Gently used item donations to the HSYC Thrift Store
- Financial contributions
- Land (5–10 acres) for future expansion
- Legacy gifts through the Paw Prints Legacy Society
So far in 2025, HSYC has placed 100 dogs and 339 cats into their forever homes.
