Construction at the Silfab Solar manufacturing facility in York County was temporarily brought to a standstill following a stop work order issued by York County. According to officials, investigators touring the facility identified employees who were not permitted for the ongoing construction project, leading to the immediate halt in work.
This recent development adds to the challenges faced by Silfab Solar in York County. The facility has been under scrutiny and faced significant backlash from local residents due to environmental concerns. Community members have voiced worries about potential air pollution and the use of hazardous materials, particularly silane gas, in the solar panel manufacturing process. These concerns have led some families in nearby neighborhoods and close to schools to consider relocating due to perceived risks to their health and safety. Silfab, however, has consistently maintained that it adheres to all safety guidelines and regulations.
Despite the recent stop work order and ongoing community discussions, Silfab Solar has a significant presence in the region. The company had received a zoning verification letter from York County in 2022, followed by a tax incentive agreement in September 2023. Silfab has made substantial investments in the facility, with expectations of creating numerous job opportunities in the area.
