Congratulations are in order for Cindy Van Buskirk of Fort Mill High School, who has been honored as Coach of the Year! This recognition comes as a testament to her exceptional leadership, dedication, and the lasting impact she has made on the school’s swimming program.
With 17 years of coaching experience, including 12 as head coach, Van Buskirk has cemented her legacy as a remarkable mentor and guide for young athletes. Under her leadership, the Fort Mill High School Girls Swimming team achieved incredible milestones, including becoming the SCHSL 2024 5A Division 2 Girls Swim Team State Champions. The team also continued their extraordinary streak as Region 3 5A Region Champions for the 16th consecutive year.
Van Buskirk’s commitment to excellence, combined with her ability to inspire and motivate her athletes, has played a pivotal role in the team’s consistent success. Her influence extends beyond the pool, as she fosters a culture of hard work, sportsmanship, and teamwork that prepares her swimmers for success both in and out of the water.

Thomas Hyslip lives in Tega Cay with his wife and daughter. After 27 years in the U.S. Army and Federal Law Enforcement, he retired to pursue his passion for teaching. Tom is now an Assistant Professor of Instruction at the University of South Florida. In 2 short years he has won 10 awards from the South Carolina Press Association, including first place in column writing, education beat reporting and best podcast.
