In a significant development for South Carolina voters, Circuit Court Judge Daniel Coble has extended the voter registration deadline from October 4 to October 14. The extension comes after the South Carolina Democratic Party filed a lawsuit, supported by the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, ACLU of South Carolina, and the League of Women Voters of South Carolina. The groups requested an extension due to the impact of Hurricane Helene, which has caused widespread destruction across the state.
With the ruling, South Carolinians now have an additional 10 days to register to vote, whether in-person, electronically, or by mail. The extension aims to ensure that those affected by the hurricane have enough time to complete the voter registration process.
Election Day is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, and the extension gives more residents the opportunity to make their voices heard. Voter advocacy groups have welcomed the ruling, emphasizing the importance of making the democratic process accessible in times of crisis.
