YORK COUNTY, SC — A 22-year-old inmate at the York County Detention Center (YCDC) died on September 5, 2024, in what authorities believe to be a suicide. Detention officers discovered the inmate unresponsive in his cell around 5:00 p.m. and immediately initiated medical aid, performing CPR until emergency medical services (EMS) arrived. Despite their efforts, life-saving measures were ultimately unsuccessful, and the inmate was pronounced dead by EMS.
Per York County Sheriff’s Office policy, Sheriff Kevin Tolson has requested that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) investigate the death. A preliminary investigation suggests the inmate took his own life.
The inmate had been in custody at the detention center since August 27, 2024, facing charges that included malicious injury to property, communicating obscene messages, domestic violence in both the first and second degree, and first-degree burglary.
Further details, including the identity of the deceased, have not been released pending the completion of the investigation and notification of the next of kin by the York County Coroner’s Office.
This marks the second in-custody death at the YCDC in 2024.
