Tragedy Struck a South Carolina Neighborhood on Fourth of July When a Man’s Fireworks Stunt Turned Deadly

A festive Fourth of July celebration turned tragic in a Summerville neighborhood when a man lost his life in a horrific fireworks accident.

Dorchester County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a block party around 10:23 p.m. after receiving reports of a man lying injured in the roadway. Upon arrival, they discovered 41-year-old Allen Ray McGrew suffering from severe head trauma the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office said, according to WSB-TV..

Witnesses recounted the shocking events leading to the fatal accident. McGrew, reportedly wearing a large top hat, placed a large firework on top of it and ignited it. The device exploded, inflicting devastating injuries. Despite immediate medical attention, McGrew was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s wife informed investigators that McGrew’s ill-fated stunt was intended to impress fellow partygoers. Family members had pleaded with him to stop, but their efforts were in vain.

The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and Dorchester County Coroner’s Office are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible fireworks handling during holiday celebrations.
