Walmart to Refund Shoppers in $45 Million Settlement Over Alleged Overcharging

Walmart is set to refund some customers as part of a $45 million settlement due to a class-action lawsuit alleging the company overcharged for certain “weighted goods” and bagged citrus in the U.S. and Puerto Rico from Oct. 19, 2018, to Jan. 19, 2024. The lawsuit accused Walmart of deceptive practices by inflating the weight on items such as meat, poultry, seafood, and bagged produce, leading to higher prices. Despite denying the allegations, Walmart opted for settlement to avoid further litigation.

Shoppers with proof of purchase may receive a refund of 2% of their total spent on eligible items, up to $500, while those without receipts could receive $10 to $25 based on the quantity of goods bought. The final approval hearing is scheduled for June 12, and if unchallenged, payments will follow via electronic methods or paper checks, though processing may take several months. Claims must be submitted by June 5.
