Harry Lee Thacker, 86

Mr. Harry Lee Thacker Jr., 86, of Columbia went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 11, 202 at Prisma Health Heart Center. He was born in Poplar Bluff, Missouri to Harry and Arthurine Thacker on January 12th, 1938. Mr. Thacker was a 1961 graduate from Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. 

During his time in Tega Cay, SC, he was an active member of the Lion’s Club in the Tega Cay chapter. Mr. Thacker was a dedicated employee as a controller for the Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation until his retirement.

Upon his retirement, Mr. Thacker relocated to the Lake Murray area where he spent time going swimming with his grandchildren during the summers and celebrating the holidays with family. He was an avid lover of older movies of his youth, jazz music, and sports; especially the University of South Carolina Gamecocks and Mizzou Tigers. 

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 30 years, Dorothy; his brother, Tommy G. Thacker, Commander, USN; his daughter, Nancy L. Felder, and his son; Gregory C. Jones (Jill).

Surviving are his children, Beverly D. Jones of Spartanburg and Heather T. Collins (Gene Ling) of Columbia; his 6 grandchildren: Addison Smalley (Tyler) of Lexington, John “Buddy” Collins of Columbia, Abby Herrington of Savannah, Kelly Garrett (Doug) and Lindsay Brabham (Dylan) of Hampton, and Alex Jones of Columbia; as well as his great-grandchildren: Penny, Sophie, Cooper and Luke Herrington, Lauren and Hunter Garrett, Walker Brabham and Harrison “Harry” Smalley.

A visitation will be held for Mr. Thacker from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home – Lexington Chapel, 503 North Lake Drive, Lexington, SC 29072, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM. 

The family has asked in lieu of flowers for donations to be made to the Tega Cay Lion’s Club and Foundation at 15087 Molokai Drive, Tega Cay, SC 29708.
