Fort Mill Crowned Safest Small City in South Carolina, Ranks 57th Nationally

Fort Mill takes the top spot on a list of smaller cities where residents experience both lower crime rates and less financial impact from crime, according to a recent study by personal finance website MoneyGeek.

Methodology and Scope of the Study

To compile the list of safest places to call home, MoneyGeek analyzed data from over 1,000 towns across the nation. Focusing on cities with populations between 30,000 and 100,000, the study utilized FBI crime data from 2022, the most recent year available. The researchers evaluated each location based on four key metrics:

  • Violent crime rate
  • Property crime rate
  • Crime cost per capita
  • Total crime costs

Why Fort Mill Stands Out

Fort Mill emerged as the safest town in South Carolina thanks to its impressively low crime-related costs and minimal violent crime. While the town saw a slightly higher rate of property crimes like burglary and theft, its overall safety profile impressed the researchers.

Other Safe Havens in South Carolina

The study also revealed other attractive and secure options within the state. Here’s a quick rundown of how other South Carolina towns fared in the national rankings:

  • Mount Pleasant: 179th place
  • Bluffton: 317th place
  • Greer: 334th place
  • Goose Creek: 614th place
