CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Spirit Airlines has announced a new non-stop route from Charlotte Douglas International Airport to Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers, beginning March 5, 2025. This new daily service offers Charlotte travelers direct access to the popular Southwest Florida destination, just in time for spring break.
The new Fort Myers route is part of Spirit’s broader strategy to enhance customer experience, particularly in Charlotte. The airline has recently upgraded customer perks at Charlotte’s airport, including the introduction of priority check-in services.
This announcement follows Spirit’s recent expansion efforts in Charlotte. In October, the airline will begin offering flights to New Orleans, running five times a week. The addition of these routes signals Spirit’s commitment to growing its presence in the Charlotte market.
Spirit, traditionally known as a budget airline, is making moves to offer more perks to its customers. In July, the Florida-based carrier introduced its “Go Big” package, which includes priority check-in, larger seats, snacks, drinks, a checked bag, a carry-on bag, and free WiFi. This shift marks a significant departure from Spirit’s no-frills reputation, as the airline seeks to appeal to a broader range of travelers.
Despite these enhancements, Spirit Airlines has faced financial challenges in recent years. The company has not posted a full-year profit since 2019, with losses totaling nearly $2.4 billion, according to the Associated Press. This financial strain has led some industry experts to speculate about the airline’s future, including the possibility of bankruptcy.
As Spirit Airlines continues to expand its offerings and improve customer service, the new Charlotte-to-Fort Myers route is a key part of its strategy to attract more travelers and regain financial stability.
