York County Stream Clean: Protecting Our Waterways One Stream at a Time

What is York County Stream Clean?

York County Stream Clean is a citizen-based monitoring and litter prevention initiative dedicated to safeguarding the health and beauty of our local waterways. Similar to the Adopt-a-Highway program, but focusing on streams instead of roads, this initiative encourages residents, groups, and organizations to take an active role in maintaining clean and healthy streams.

How Does It Work?

Whether you’re a concerned citizen, part of a group, or an organization looking to make a difference, York County Stream Clean offers opportunities for both one-time clean-ups and long-term “adoptions” of stream sections for more frequent maintenance. York County provides all necessary supplies for a successful clean-up at no cost and will even pick up the trash bags when you’re done.

Why Is York County Stream Clean Important?

Litter is not only an eyesore but also a threat to our ecosystems and the organisms that depend on them, including people. York County Stream Clean aims to raise citizen awareness about water quality issues and engage the community in efforts to reduce trash in and along our waterways. By doing so, the program helps protect local wildlife, improve water quality, and enhance the natural beauty of our environment.

Why You Should Get Involved

Participating in a stream clean-up offers a meaningful way to contribute to the beautification and cleanliness of York County’s waters. Volunteers can see the direct impact of their efforts, making a tangible difference in their community. Here’s how you can get involved:

  1. Pick a Section of a Stream to Clean: Choose a stream segment you’d like to adopt and maintain.
  2. Select Clean Stream Coordinators: If you’re part of a group, designate one or more coordinators to manage the clean-up efforts.
  3. Reach Out to York County Storm Water: Contact them to get started and receive your clean-up supplies.
  4. Clean the Stream: Organize your clean-up event and help keep our waterways pristine.
