Charlotte’s New Airport Overlook Takes Off Today

The new Charlotte Douglas International Airport Overlook officially opens today, promising an inspiring experience for aviation enthusiasts and families alike. This is the fifth dedicated Overlook at CLT since 1937, featuring breathtaking views of the airfield, skyline, and terminal.

Prime Viewing Area

Visitors can enjoy a front-row seat to the carefully choreographed takeoffs and landings on Runway 18C/36C and the soon-to-be-completed Fourth Parallel Runway. This prime viewing area is set to become a favorite spot for plane spotters and aviation fans.

Educational Displays

The Overlook includes a series of informative exhibits that showcase the rich history of aviation in the Carolinas. These displays provide insights into the types of planes that fly in and out of CLT, the science behind a 747’s flight, and the construction and naming of runways. These educational elements aim to spark curiosity and knowledge among visitors of all ages.

Playgrounds, Aircraft Display, and Memorial

The Overlook features two aviation-themed playgrounds designed for different age groups. Young visitors can enjoy a plane-shaped climbing structure, an air traffic control tower with a slide, a mini fuel truck, a baggage cart, and a runway for imaginative play.

A highlight is the retired U.S. military fighter jet, an F4 Phantom II, which flew during the Vietnam War and Cold War, offering a tangible piece of history. Additionally, there is a dedicated memorial for USAir Flight 1016, ensuring that the Overlook also serves as a place of reflection and remembrance.

Other Amenities

To enhance the visitor experience, the Overlook includes covered picnic tables and a designated food truck area. Parking is convenient with paved car and bus spaces, including accessible options. Visitors will appreciate the shaded areas with benches, trees, and sails, as well as restrooms equipped with baby changing stations and pet relief areas.
