Fort Mill, SC (Tega Cay Sun) -Silfab Solar, a prominent solar panel producer in North America, has unveiled plans to broaden its presence in the U.S. by initiating operations in Fort Mill on Sept. 19, 2023. This ambitious move involves a $150 million investment, which is projected to generate 800 new employment opportunities.
The final approval was granted on Monday, September 18, 2023 by York County Council in a 4-3 vote. Many area residents have voiced concerns of the potential health and environmental impacts and the facility’s location next to two new schools, as well as the increased traffic on US-21 in Fort Mill. Councilmembers Tom Audette, Allison Love, and Debi Cloninger vote against the measure.
Boasting over four decades in the solar sector, Silfab Solar takes pride in crafting, engineering, and producing its distinguished line of high-performance solar panels suitable for both homes and businesses.
Currently, Silfab Solar runs two facilities in the U.S. located in Bellingham and Burlington, Wash., and another in Toronto, Canada.
Silfab Solar has secured a lease for a vast 785,000-square-foot premise at 7149 Logistics Lane in Fort Mill. The company anticipates commencing operations by the third quarter of 2024.
In relation to this venture, the state’s Coordinating Council for Economic Development has sanctioned job development incentives. Additionally, a $2 million Set-Aside grant has been granted to York County by the council to aid in covering building enhancement expenses.
