SCDOT to Close Assembly Drive Intersection at SC 160 in Fort Mill

The South Carolina Department of Transportation plans to close the intersection of SC 160 and Assembly Drive in the Baxter Village area of Fort Mill beginning Sunday, July 12, as crews continue interchange improvements and widening work on SC 160 over Interstate 77.

The signalized intersection is the main point where Assembly Drive and Carolina Place meet SC 160, and it carries much of the daily traffic moving between the Baxter Village neighborhood and the highway. Weather permitting, the South Carolina Department of Transportation, known as SCDOT, expects the closure to remain in place for about one week.

What is closing

The work zone shuts the Assembly Drive connection to SC 160 at the traffic signal near Carolina Place. Drivers who normally turn onto SC 160 from Assembly Drive, or who cross the highway at that light, will not be able to use the intersection while the closure is in effect. The entrance to Baxter Village at that point is included in the closure.

How to get around

SCDOT has established marked detours, shown in green on the agency’s map of the area. The detours route neighborhood traffic through nearby streets, including Market Street to the south and Nations Commons Street to the northwest, to reach SC 160 at other access points rather than through the closed Assembly Drive intersection. Internal Baxter Village streets such as 1st Baxter Crossing remain open as part of the local routing. Drivers should follow posted detour signs, which take precedence over any single described route.

Why the work is happening

The closure allows crews to keep progressing on the larger interchange project, which includes widening SC 160 where it crosses Interstate 77. SCDOT has posted additional information about the overall project on its website.

What drivers should know

SCDOT asks drivers to slow down, stay alert, and pay attention to crews and signs in the work zone. The one week timeline depends on weather, and crews could extend the closure if rain or other conditions delay the work. Motorists should plan for added travel time when heading to and from Baxter Village during the closure.
