President Donald Trump endorsed South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette in the state’s Republican gubernatorial primary on Friday, throwing his support behind her with less than two weeks remaining before voters head to the polls.
The endorsement, posted on Trump’s Truth Social platform and announced by Evette’s campaign from Travelers Rest, lands in the middle of a crowded six candidate Republican field and gives Evette a coveted boost as early voting is already underway across the state, including in York and Lancaster Counties.
In his post, Trump called Evette an “America First Patriot” and praised her early support for his 2024 presidential campaign, her work advancing his policy agenda, and her background as a business leader. He said she has his “complete and total endorsement.”
A Loyal Trump Ally
Evette has served as lieutenant governor since 2019 and entered the governor’s race in July 2025. Her campaign noted that she was the only South Carolina gubernatorial candidate in the field to back Trump as soon as he launched his 2024 bid, and that she raised money for his campaigns, traveled the country on his behalf, and worked alongside Gov. Henry McMaster to advance his agenda in the state.
In a statement shared on social media, Evette thanked the president and tied her entry into public life to his first run for office.
“Your walk down that golden escalator inspired my entry into public service,” Evette said. She added that she was grateful for his support and would continue working on behalf of South Carolina families.
A Crowded Primary
Evette faces five other Republicans in the June 9 primary: Attorney General Alan Wilson, U.S. Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, state Sen. Josh Kimbrell, and businessman Rom Reddy. The winner will compete in November for the seat McMaster is leaving, as the governor is barred from seeking another term.
McMaster, who served alongside Evette for years, endorsed her own campaign in February in a move widely viewed as an effort to position her for the president’s backing. Several rivals have spent months promoting their own ties to Trump, making the endorsement a significant turn in the race.
In his post, Trump also indicated that McMaster’s son, Henry McMaster Jr., would likely serve as Evette’s running mate. Evette’s campaign had not formally confirmed that detail as of Friday.
What Comes Next
Early voting is in progress, and the primary takes place June 9. If no candidate clears 50 percent of the vote, the top two finishers will advance to a runoff on June 23. Voters can find more information on Evette’s campaign and upcoming events at www.pamelaevette.com.
