Officials from Piedmont Medical Center, the Town of Fort Mill, and the York County Chamber of Commerce gathered Thursday morning to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of a new Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The facility is scheduled to officially open to patients on May 12.
The expansion marks a significant milestone for healthcare in York County, allowing the hospital to provide advanced support for premature infants and those born with congenital anomalies or respiratory challenges. Previously, families requiring this level of specialized intervention often had to seek care outside the community, resulting in difficult separations during critical periods. The new unit enables local families to remain together while receiving high-level medical attention.
Led by a dedicated team of neonatal specialists, the unit includes approximately 10 new beds designed to accommodate both Level II and Level III care. This development is part of a broader hospital strategy to increase patient capacity and streamline access to specialized maternal and infant services.
Hospital leadership emphasized that the core of the new unit consists of highly trained nurses and obstetric professionals specifically focused on neonatal outcomes. By offering these resources in Fort Mill, Piedmont Medical Center aims to alleviate the challenges often associated with maternal and infant care, ensuring that even the smallest and most vulnerable patients have access to life-saving technology close to home.
