SC Attorney General Supports New Federal Prison Rules on Inmate Housing, Transgender Procedures

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson has expressed support for a recent Executive Order issued by President Donald Trump that mandates federal prisons house inmates based on their biological sex and ends the use of taxpayer funds for gender-affirming procedures for federal prisoners.

Wilson stated that prisons are intended for accountability and consequences, not as venues for social experiments. He asserted that the Executive Order upholds law and order, protects women, and rejects what he described as dangerous policies impacting the justice system. Wilson maintained that individuals who commit crimes do not have the right to dictate their biology or demand special treatment. He indicated that the Executive Order addresses public dissatisfaction with these issues.

The Executive Order specifically prohibits the use of taxpayer dollars for elective gender-affirming procedures for federal inmates, including hormone therapies and surgeries. It also requires that inmates who are biologically male be housed in male-only facilities. This measure aims to address growing concerns regarding assaults, coercion, and privacy violations within women’s correctional facilities.

Earlier this month, Attorney General Wilson joined 24 other state attorneys general in filing a legal brief supporting the administration’s authority to maintain safe prisons and reject unproven, taxpayer-funded treatments. The brief highlighted the potential dangers of placing biologically male individuals in women’s housing and argued that there is no constitutional right to gender-transition procedures for incarcerated individuals.

Wilson reaffirmed South Carolina’s commitment to collaborating with national leaders to resist policies that he believes undermine safety and public trust in institutions. He reiterated a firm stance against what he termed “leftist ideology” that he believes disregards basic biology, endangers women, and wastes taxpayer funds.
