INDIAN LAND, S.C. — The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has received approval to move forward with construction of a new hospital in Indian Land, marking a significant expansion of healthcare services in Lancaster County.
The hospital is part of a broader $860 million plan that also includes the construction of another facility in Summerville, SC.
South Carolina Fiscal Accountability Authority approved MUSC borrowing for the projects. The construction will increase MUSC’s total debt to nearly $1.8 billion — more than double its current level — a move MUSC officials say is necessary to address critical care needs in underserved areas.
Indian Land, located just south of the North Carolina border, has experienced rapid residential and commercial growth over the past decade. Local leaders and residents have long expressed the need for more accessible healthcare infrastructure.
MUSC is a state-owned hospital system and one of South Carolina’s largest healthcare providers. The new hospital is expected to bring more than 500 jobs to the area, according to preliminary estimates.
Construction timelines have not yet been finalized.
