The family of Fort Mill teen Logan Gurley is inviting the community to a memorial service in his honor at 7 p.m. on Sunday at Catawba Park in Tega Cay.
Emergency crews were called to Pitcairn Park on Triton Drive around 4 p.m. on Monday to search for the missing 16-year-old. His body was later recovered by Charlotte Fire. Authorities reported that Gurley had been swimming with friends before he was found underwater.
The memorial service on Sunday will include a candlelight vigil and tributes from family and friends. Gurley, a well-known basketball player at Fort Mill High School, was a rising sophomore.
In the wake of this tragedy, a GoFundMe organized by Tega Cay Mayor Chris Gray has raised more than $45,000 as of this writing. According to Mayor Gray, the funds will help cover funeral expenses and provide financial support to the Gurley family.
“Logan was a bright light in our community, known for his kind spirit and infectious smile,” Mayor Gray wrote. “During this incredibly difficult time, we are coming together to support the Gurley family.”
The community’s outpouring of support reflects the impact Logan had on those around him and the deep loss felt by his passing.
