The Battle of Huck’s Defeat: A Weekend of Revolutionary Reenactments at Historic Brattonsville

The American Revolution comes alive at Historic Brattonsville with the reenactment of a significant Patriot victory—the “Battle of Huck’s Defeat.” From July 13 to July 14, 2024, visitors will step back in time to experience this crucial moment in history, complete with living history activities and demonstrations.

Saturday, July 13

  • 10:30 AM: The day begins with a wreath-laying ceremony by the Sons of the American Revolution.
  • All Day: Demonstrations of 18th-century barbecue techniques.
  • 2:00 PM: The reenactment of the Battle of Huck’s Defeat, a pivotal Patriot victory during the American Revolution.

Sunday, July 14

  • 10:30 AM: An 18th-century church service.
  • 2:00 PM: The reenactment of the Battle of Blackstock’s Plantation.

Special Presentation

At noon on both days, Carin Bloom from Middleton Place in Charleston will present her research in a special presentation titled “A Black Loyalist’s Liberty: How Lucy Banbury Took Back Her Freedom.” Bloom’s recently-published book, “Women Waging War in the American Revolution,” will be available for sale in Historic Brattonsville’s gift shop.

Living History Activities

Throughout the weekend, visitors will be immersed in 18th-century life. Military reenactors will demonstrate live cavalry and musket firing, while period-dressed interpreters perform daily chores such as laundry, cooking, woodworking, and blacksmithing. Children’s militia drills, games, and educational activities will be ongoing, providing an engaging and educational experience for all ages.

Site Tours

Guided tours of the Huck’s Defeat Battlefield will reveal the details of this historic event. Visitors can also explore the original Bratton family homes, preserved meticulously to reflect the era.
