The Tega Cay and Fort Mill communities are mourning the loss of Logan Gurley, a 16-year-old student-athlete who tragically drowned while swimming with friends at Pitcairn Park on Monday afternoon.
Emergency responders were called to the scene around 4 p.m. after Gurley was reported missing in the water. Despite a swift response and efforts to resuscitate him, Gurley was pronounced dead at the scene.
A beloved member of the Fort Mill High School basketball team, Gurley was known for his talent, sportsmanship, and towering 6’4″ presence on the court. His untimely death has left teammates, classmates, and the wider community devastated.
Tega Cay Mayor Chris Gray has launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist Gurley’s family with funeral expenses and other needs during this difficult time. The campaign, titled “Help Support the Family of Logan Gurley,” can be found https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-support-the-family-of-logan-gurley.
“Our hearts go out to Logan’s family and friends as they navigate this unimaginable loss,” said Tega Cay Police Chief Crosby. “We urge everyone to cherish their loved ones and hold them close.”
As the community grieves, friends and classmates are remembering Gurley for his infectious smile, kind heart, and dedication to his sport. The Fort Mill High School community is planning a memorial service to honor Gurley’s life and legacy. Details will be announced in the coming days.
