High Temperatures Expected: Tips to Protect Your Pets’ Paws

June 26, 2024 – The National Weather Service has forecasted temperatures to soar into the high 90s in the Charlotte Metro area over the next few days. As the mercury rises, it’s important that pet owners take extra precautions to protect their furry friends from the heat.

One effective way to check if the pavement is too hot for your pet is the “seven-second rule.” Place the back of your hand on the pavement; if you can’t hold it there for at least seven seconds, the surface is too hot for your dog’s paws.

We’ve provided some tips to keep your pet’s paws safe during this heatwave:

  • Walk during cooler hours: Early morning or late evening walks are ideal to avoid the hottest parts of the day.
  • Stick to grassy areas: Grass is cooler than concrete or asphalt, reducing the risk of burns.
  • Inspect your pet’s paws: Regularly check for sores, cuts, or cracks that could indicate damage from hot surfaces.
  • Stay indoors: Limit outdoor activities and keep your pets inside as much as possible.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure your pets stay safe and comfortable during the extreme heat.
