Columbia, SC (Tega Cay Sun) -The Fort Mill High School Yellow Jackets girls’ swim team won their second consecutive 5A state championship at the University of South Carolina this past Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets started the competition with a state championship in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Ava Corbi, Lila Hadley, Josie Chandler, and Olivia Corbi brought home the gold.
Fort Mill also won the final event of the championships. The team of Ava Corbi, Mia Pogorzelski, Hadley, and Olivia Corbi won the 400-yard freestyle relay and secured the title for the Yellow Jackets.
The standout athlete of the day was senior Olivia Corbi, who shone brightly for Fort Mill. In addition to being part of two relay wins, she also secured a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle. With those performances, she etched her name in the school’s history by breaking school records in both freestyle events.
Fort Mill also boasted top-notch performances from other swimmers, including Lila Hadley, Ava Corbi, Mia Pogorzelski, and Mac Spurrier. Lila Hadley finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke and fifth in the 200-yard individual medley. Ava Corbi claimed seventh place in the 100-yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle events. Pogorzelski delivered strong results, finishing sixth in the 200-yard freestyle and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle, while Spurrier earned fourth place in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Fort Mill’s head coach, Cindy Van Buskirk, was again recognized as the 5A state girls swim coach of the year. Cindy Van Buskirk’s was also the coach of the year last year and she is only the fourth Fort Mill High coach to secure multiple state championships and to claim back-to-back state titles.
