In Health with Dr. Brian: Are you drinking enough water?

There’s no clear agreement about how much water you should drink each day.

We tell members and our patients that a goal is 50% of your body weight in ounces. So a 140 pound woman should aim for 70 ounces per day, or approximately 8 cups.

That number would nudge higher in warmer temperatures and with increased activity.

In regards to weight loss, many people misinterpret thirst for hunger; so at the first signs of hunger, grab a class of water and they may also help reduce mindless snacking when you’re actually thirsty, not hungry.

I have put together three practical tips that can help you increase your water intake effortlessly.

Infuse Your Water for Added Flavor: if you find plain water unappealing, try infusing it with natural flavors. Adding slices of fruits like lemon, lime, berries, or cucumbers, or even herbs like mint or basil can make water more enticing. This not only improves the taste but also can add a nutritional boost to your hydration efforts.

Set Regular Drinking Reminders: in our busy lives, it’s easy to forget to drink water. Setting reminders on your phone or computer can be a great way to ensure you’re hydrating regularly throughout the day. You might also establish a habit of drinking a glass of water at certain times, such as before each meal or every hour on the hour.

For me, I drink 2 cups once I wake up to get my day started.

Carry a Reusable Water Bottle: having a water bottle with you at all times serves as a visual reminder to drink water and makes it more convenient to hydrate, whether you’re at home, in the office, or on the go. Choose a bottle you enjoy using, and aim to refill it a specific number of times each day to meet your hydration goals.

Remember, the benefits of adequate water intake are immense, ranging from improved energy levels to better digestion and cognitive function. If you have any questions or need further  advice, please feel free to reach out.
