Tega Cay City Council Meeting Focuses on Deer Culling, Road Improvements, City Attorney Appointment, and Community Initiatives

At the Tega Cay City Council’s regular meeting on Monday, September 16, 2024, several significant decisions were made, including the approval of a deer culling program, the continuation of the Pennies for Progress initiative, approval of the FY24-25 city budget, and the formal appointment of the city’s new municipal attorney. The council also issued proclamations for Constitution Day and Fire Prevention Week, and provided updates on economic development, local events, and community support efforts.

Deer Culling Program Approved

One of the central decisions during the meeting was the approval of a contract with Low Country Wildlife Specialist LLC to cull 80 deer within city limits. The initiative is part of the city’s wildlife management program aimed at addressing the growing deer population. While Councilman Carter expressed opposition to the culling, the majority supported moving forward with the program. They noted that the venison from the culled deer will be donated to the Catawba Indian Nation, with the nation covering processing costs.

The culling program is seen as a necessary step to manage the local deer population and prevent road accidents and other community safety issues related to wildlife.

Pennies for Progress: Focus on Road Safety and Infrastructure

A large portion of the meeting was dedicated to a presentation on the continuation of the Pennies for Progress initiative. David Buist outlined the goals of the program, which aims to improve road safety, connectivity, and infrastructure across York County. The program, now in its fifth iteration, will appear on the November 2024 ballot.

David Buist stressed that a “yes” vote for Pennies does not raise taxes, as it continues an existing program. The $410 million, seven-year initiative includes $80 million for resurfacing 76 miles of road and other major projects, such as improvements to U.S. 21, Sutton Road, and the widening of the Fort Mill Parkway.  The program also includes two projects in the city of Tega Cay. Resurfacing of Dam Road and Stonecrest Boulevard.

Proclamations for Constitution Day and Fire Prevention Week

Two proclamations were issued during the meeting. The first recognized September 17, 2024, as Constitution Day and September 17-23 as Constitution Week, celebrating the 237th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution.

The second proclamation designated October 6-12 as Fire Prevention Week. The theme for this year is “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You,” focusing on the importance of installing and maintaining smoke alarms in homes. The council also encouraged residents to attend the Tega Cay Fire Department’s open house on October 13.

Appointment of Municipal Attorney

The council officially appointed Chaplan Spencer from Spencer and Spencer Law Firm as the new municipal attorney for the City of Tega Cay. Spencer has been serving in an interim capacity and has impressed the council with his professionalism and expertise.

Budget Approval and Municipal Attorney Appointment

The council unanimously approved the second reading of the fiscal year 2024-2025 budget.

Upcoming Events and Community Engagement

Residents of Tega Cay are encouraged to participate in upcoming events such as National Night Out on October 1, Catawba Fest on October 12, and Pumpkin Palooza on October 28. Registration for the pumpkin carving contest is open until October 18.

Council members also expressed appreciation for city staff’s hard work, particularly in response to recent storms, and highlighted the tight-knit community spirit that makes Tega Cay special.
