Charlotte, NC – After May 2025, the Wells Fargo Championship, a distinguished event on the PGA Tour hosted by Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, will no longer bear its current title. This marks the end of a 22-year period during which the tournament evolved into a significant event, boasting a purse of $20 million.
Quail Hollow Club has a history of hosting major golf events, such as the PGA Championship and the Presidents Cup. The next event in May will be the final edition sponsored by Wells Fargo.
Wells Fargo announced their decision to withdraw from sponsoring this key event post-2025, while taking pride in their contribution to raising over $30 million for various charities via the tournament.
Reports from Sports Business Journal indicate that the PGA Tour’s recent funding adjustments demand greater purse contributions from tournaments. Wells Fargo contemplated remaining a sponsor by relinquishing its status as a signature event to reduce expenses.
Debuting in 2003 as the Wachovia Championship, the tournament became a favorite for its excellent course and top-tier hospitality.
Despite Wells Fargo’s upcoming exit, the PGA Tour plans to keep its footprint in Charlotte and is in talks with potential sponsors to take over the title sponsorship.
