Silt Fencing Installation Begins on Spratt Street Ahead of Water Line Project

Fort Mill, SC – Preparatory work for a significant water line installation project in the Spratt Street area of Fort Mill is set to begin this week with the installation of silt fencing along the roadway. Contractors will be placing the fencing as they gear up for the first phase of the project. Importantly, this initial work will not cause any disruption to traffic flow in the area.

The upcoming water line replacement project will involve the installation of over 1,500 feet of new water line along Spratt Street, stretching from Leonidas Street to North White Street. This essential infrastructure upgrade will replace existing water lines that are nearly 60 years old. These older lines are constructed of cast iron, a material that is more susceptible to breakage compared to the more durable ductile iron pipes used in modern installations.

The upcoming construction will require careful navigation around existing trees and underground utility lines, obstacles that crews did not encounter during the original installation of the aging water lines.

This vital infrastructure project is being made possible through funding from the South Carolina Infrastructure Investment Program (SCIIP). The SCIIP is administered by the SC Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA) and is funded by federal State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (SLFRF) provided through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

“We have leveraged federal grant opportunities to address critical pieces of aging lines,” stated Fort Mill Utilities Department Director Greg Rushing. “This should allow us to reinforce backbone water lines that supply the heart of downtown.” The project signifies the Town’s commitment to upgrading its infrastructure to ensure reliable water service for the downtown area.
