FORT MILL, S.C. — The Humane Society of York County (HSYC) is shining a spotlight on two special animals in need of loving homes. This week’s featured adoptable pets are Gertrude the cat and Gander the dog, both of whom are ready to meet their future families.
Cat of the Week: Gertrude
Gertrude is a three-year-old calico cat who arrived at the HSYC about four weeks ago as an owner surrender. Since then, she has adjusted well and can now be found in the Cat Lounge at the Rescue, offering visitors affectionate purrs and gentle rubs.
Described by staff as a calm and loving companion, Gertrude is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, and tested—making her adoption-ready. The team encourages potential adopters to schedule an appointment to meet her by calling 803-802-0902. Adoption requirements are available at humanesocietyofyorkcounty.org.
Dog of the Week: Gander
Gander, a four-year-old mixed breed, has been at the HSYC for over 1,000 days. Originally surrendered through no fault of his own, Gander has been patiently waiting for a second chance at a forever home.
Energetic and playful, Gander enjoys walks, yard time, and being around other dogs with similar energy levels. While he takes time to warm up, HSYC staff say he forms strong bonds once trust is established. Like Gertrude, Gander is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and tested. Ways to Help the Rescue
In addition to adopting, HSYC invites the community to support their efforts in various ways:

Laundry Assistance: Due to recent rainy weather, the Rescue has a backlog of clean but wet laundry. Volunteers are encouraged to pick up a basket or two to dry and return.

Volunteer Opportunities: Positions are available at the Rescue, Thrift Shop, and for off-site fundraising. Foster homes are also in high demand with kitten season underway. Details at Foster Info.

Donations Needed: Items such as clay cat litter, turkey/chicken baby food, bleach, detergent, and dog treats are in demand. Gently used goods can also be donated to the Thrift Shop.

Adoption Update
So far in 2025, HSYC has found homes for 57 dogs and 193 cats, a testament to the community’s continued support.
