FORT MILL, S.C. — The Humane Society of York County (HSYC) has named Scuba Steve and Sanford as its Cat and Dog of the Week, highlighting two adoptable animals with standout personalities who are still waiting for their forever homes.
Scuba Steve: A Tabby with Character
Scuba Steve, a confident 1-year-9-month-old tabby, has been at HSYC for 15 weeks following an owner surrender. Despite the circumstances of his arrival, he has remained social, playful, and full of energy. Known for his bold personality, he enjoys engaging play sessions in the Cat Room with fellow felines and welcomes visitors with enthusiasm.
Scuba Steve is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and tested. He’s looking for a home equipped with cat trees, a window perch for bird watching, and humans ready to shower him with attention.
Sanford: Smart, Social, and Ready to Learn
Sanford, an 8-month-old dog brought to HSYC from Animal Control six weeks ago, has already impressed staff with his intelligence and charm. He recently completed Zoom Room training and is eager to continue learning with his future family. Sanford enjoys walks, playtime with other dogs, and plenty of interaction.
Like all HSYC pets, Sanford is ready for adoption following a successful vetting process. Prospective adopters can schedule an appointment by calling 803-802-0902 or visiting humanesocietyofyorkcounty.org.
Summer Pet Safety Reminders
With rising temperatures, HSYC urges pet owners to avoid taking animals on errands during peak heat and to always provide access to cool water and shaded or air-conditioned spaces. Pet owners are also advised to avoid walking pets on hot pavement during midday hours.
Kitten Season and Ongoing Needs
The shelter reports that kitten season is in full swing and encourages community members to consider fostering. Requests to surrender kittens can be submitted via email at [email protected], and all inquiries are addressed in the order they are received.
To support its rescue efforts, HSYC is seeking donations of time, funds, and supplies. Items in particular need include:
-
Clay cat litter
-
Gerber baby food (turkey or chicken)
-
Bleach and laundry detergent
-
Soft and hard dog treats
Gently used items can also be donated to the HSYC Thrift Shop, where sales help fund shelter operations.
Community Impact
So far in 2025, the Humane Society of York County has placed 64 dogs and 203 cats into permanent homes. The shelter encourages the public to share adoptable pet profiles and updates through social media to help boost visibility.
