Minor Earthquake Reported in Lancaster County Near SC-NC Border

A minor earthquake was reported near the South Carolina–North Carolina state line Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The 2.2 magnitude earthquake occurred around 3:00 am, with a recorded depth of approximately five kilometers. The epicenter was located about 4.7 miles south-southwest of JAARS, North Carolina, and roughly 16 miles east-southeast of Rock Hill, placing it within Lancaster County.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Small earthquakes of this magnitude are typically not strong enough to cause structural damage but may be felt in nearby communities.

Lancaster County and surrounding areas occasionally experience minor seismic activity, though significant earthquakes are uncommon in the region.

The USGS continues to monitor seismic activity across the Carolinas.
