York County Sheriff Warns of Jury Duty Scam Involving Cryptocurrency

YORK COUNTY, S.C. – The York County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning to residents about a scam involving fraudulent jury duty fines paid through cryptocurrency. The department recently posted on social media, alerting the public to reports of scammers posing as law enforcement officers and threatening victims with legal consequences if they do not immediately pay a fine.

According to the sheriff’s office, the scammers contact individuals by phone, claiming they have missed jury duty and must pay a fine to avoid arrest. Victims are then instructed to pay using cryptocurrency or other untraceable methods, such as prepaid gift cards or wire transfers.

Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious and verify any claims directly with the courthouse or law enforcement before taking action. If you or someone you know has been targeted by this scam, report it to the York County Sheriff’s Office or the South Carolina Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division.
