Today, December 13, we celebrate the birthday of the National Guard, the oldest military organization in the United States. Its origins date back to December 13, 1636, when the Massachusetts General Court organized three militia regiments to protect the early settlers from external threats. This historic event marked the formal establishment of a citizen-soldier force that has evolved into today’s National Guard.
The concept of a militia—a force of ordinary citizens trained and ready to defend their communities—was deeply rooted in English tradition. In the New World, the need for local defense led to the creation of these regiments in Massachusetts, setting a precedent for the establishment of similar forces across the colonies.
The name “National Guard” was officially adopted much later. In 1824, New York State militia units began using the title in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, the French hero of the American Revolution, and the French “Garde Nationale.” The term became the nationwide standard in 1903 following the passage of the Militia Act, which formally integrated state militias into the federal military structure while preserving their dual role in state and federal missions.
Throughout its history, the National Guard has played a critical role in the defense of the nation. Guard units have participated in every major conflict involving the United States, from the Revolutionary War to modern deployments overseas. Equally important, the Guard has been a cornerstone of domestic support, responding to natural disasters, civil unrest, and emergencies such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today, the National Guard operates under a unique dual state-federal mission, serving as a vital link between the military and local communities. Its members, known as citizen-soldiers, balance their civilian lives with their commitment to the nation’s defense, embodying the Guard’s motto: “Always Ready, Always There.”
