As winter takes hold, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) highlights critical safety risks associated with home heating equipment, including space heaters, furnaces, and fireplaces. Fires and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning are among the leading dangers, disproportionately impacting vulnerable communities.
Space Heater Safety
Space heaters are involved in 1,700 fires annually, causing 70 deaths and 160 injuries, according to CPSC data. To minimize risks:
- Keep heaters at least three feet from flammable materials.
- Plug heaters directly into wall outlets, not power strips or extension cords.
- Turn heaters off when unattended or while sleeping.
Furnaces and Fireplaces
Annual inspections of fuel-burning systems and chimneys are essential. Faulty or blocked systems can lead to fires or CO poisoning. CPSC estimates fireplaces and chimneys cause 15,800 fires, 20 deaths, and 50 injuries annually.
Generator Safety
CPSC reports that portable generators are a significant source of CO poisoning. Always operate generators outdoors, at least 20 feet from homes, and avoid use in enclosed spaces.
Smoke and CO Alarms
- Install smoke alarms on every level and in bedrooms.
- Place CO alarms on each level and near sleeping areas.
- Test alarms monthly and replace batteries annually or use 10-year sealed models.
Additional Tips
- Use flashlights instead of candles during power outages.
- Check for recalled heating products at www.cpsc.gov/recalls.
By following these CPSC-recommended safety measures, you can help protect your family from preventable winter hazards.
