SLED called to investigate YCDC in-custody death

YORK COUNTY, SC – A 48-year-old male York County Detention Center inmate has died after being taken to the hospital for medical concerns.

Shortly before 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2024, the YCDC staff was informed by the inmate that he was not feeling well. After checking the inmate’s vitals, security staff contacted YCDC medical staff, who determined that he needed further advanced medical care. Detention officers then transported the inmate to an area hospital. He continued to receive advanced medical care at the hospital until he died at 4:24 a.m. on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.

In keeping with YCSO policy, the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has been requested by Sheriff Kevin Tolson to investigate the death.

The inmate had been at the YCDC since October 18, 2023, as a courtesy hold for the Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office for the charges of murder, accessory after the fact to murder, criminal conspiracy, burglary 1st degree, and armed robbery with a deadly weapon.

Details, including the inmate’s identity, will not be available until the investigation is complete and the York County Coroner’s Office notifies the next of kin.
