Reed Gold Mine: A Historic Treasure in North Carolina
Nestled in the heart of Midland, North Carolina, Reed Gold Mine is more than just a historical landmark—it’s the site of the first documented gold discovery in the United States. This momentous event in 1799, when Conrad Reed stumbled upon a 17-pound gold nugget in Little Meadow Creek, sparked a gold fever that spread across the South and beyond. At its peak, gold mining became second only to farming in employment across North Carolina, with annual gold recovery values exceeding one million dollars. The state led the nation in gold production until the California Gold Rush of 1848 shifted the spotlight westward.
Today, Reed Gold Mine remains a preserved slice of history, offering visitors a glimpse into the early days of America’s gold rush era. The site features underground guided tours, gold panning opportunities, and a museum showcasing artifacts and stories from its rich past. Admission is free, though guided tours and gold panning come with a nominal fee.
Gold panning is a favorite activity among visitors, available from March through November for just $3.00 plus tax for ages 8 and up. Guests can try their hand at uncovering flecks of gold, just as miners did centuries ago. However, weather conditions such as rain or extreme heat may impact panning availability.
