McColl, SC Police Department Faces Mass Resignation Over Alleged Hostile Work Environment

MCCOLL, S.C. — The town of McColl has been left without a police force after Police Chief Bob Hale and all four of his officers resigned, citing harassment, budget cuts, and a hostile work environment created by a specific council member. The resignations, confirmed on social media and through local news outlets, have sparked community concern over public safety and the internal struggles of the department.

In a heartfelt statement shared on Facebook, Chief Hale outlined the challenges that led to his decision. “For months, I have endured unwarranted and malicious behavior aimed at undermining my integrity and leadership,” Hale wrote. He described a toxic atmosphere fueled by personal attacks and harassment, which he attributed to a council member. According to Hale, these actions not only affected him personally but also hindered the department’s effectiveness and morale.

Budget Cuts and Operational Challenges

Chief Hale also detailed significant budget cuts imposed by the council member, which he said hampered the department’s ability to function. He stated that repeated requests for funding to modernize equipment, enhance training, and increase staffing were denied. These limitations, he argued, compromised the safety of McColl’s residents and officers alike.

“The safety of the residents and the well-being of the officers should have been prioritized,” Hale wrote. “Sadly, this was not the case, and the majority of my tenure as Chief of Police was spent clearing the names of my officers as well as myself from numerous falsehoods.”

Community Concerns

The resignation of the entire police force leaves McColl, a small town in Marlboro County, without immediate law enforcement presence. Town officials have not yet announced plans for interim measures to address public safety.

Residents have expressed a mix of concern and support. Many have taken to social media to thank Hale and his officers for their service while calling for accountability and leadership changes within the town council. “You have done a wonderful job. We were lucky to have your service for the people of McColl,” one resident wrote. “The citizens of McColl should ask for this councilman to resign.”

Calls for Accountability

Chief Hale expressed hope that his resignation would shed light on the severity of the issues facing the department. “I remain hopeful that the Town of McColl will come together to address these challenges, prioritize ethical leadership, and create an environment where those in public service can perform their duties free from undue interference and hostility,” he stated.

A Growing Concern

The mass resignation in McColl highlights broader challenges faced by small-town police departments across the country, including limited resources, political interference, and the difficulty of retaining officers. According to reports, the McColl Police Department struggled with outdated equipment, understaffing, and low morale, all of which were exacerbated by budgetary constraints and internal disputes.

What’s Next?

As McColl navigates this unprecedented situation, the town council will need to act swiftly to restore public trust and ensure the safety of its residents. Whether this includes hiring new officers, relying on assistance from neighboring jurisdictions, or addressing the internal issues that led to these resignations remains to be seen.

Chief Hale ended his statement with gratitude for the community and his team. “Thank you for everything, McColl,” he wrote. “Please continue to pray for me and my fellow officers, but more importantly, pray for one of the most underrated and special places in this entire state.”

This developing story has drawn attention from both local and national media, underscoring the challenges faced by small-town law enforcement in ensuring safety and accountability.
