COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) has announced the launch of the ‘Free to Focus SC’ initiative, a statewide effort aimed at reducing digital distractions in schools. The announcement follows final approval by the State Board of Education earlier this week of a model cell phone policy designed to limit smartphone use in classrooms across South Carolina.
‘Free to Focus SC’ will serve as a comprehensive resource for educators, parents, and students as they adapt to the new policy, which is set for statewide implementation in January 2025. Local school districts will begin finalizing the roll out of the policy this fall.
The new cell phone policy aims to create a learning environment free from constant digital interruptions, allowing students to focus more on developing essential skills outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. This initiative promotes meaningful face-to-face interactions, peer collaboration, and the cultivation of skills necessary for college, career, and life success.
“Research and feedback show that the widespread use of smartphones in schools has created serious academic, mental health, and discipline challenges,” said State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver. “With this policy, South Carolina students will be free to focus on their academic future and building life-long friendships in a safe environment, while South Carolina educators are free to focus on teaching.”
A survey of South Carolina educators revealed that cell phones are a significant source of distraction during instructional time, leading to behavior issues, cheating, and cyberbullying. Teachers noted that the constant use of phones often results in lost instructional minutes and a decline in academic performance.
“Here in South Carolina, we are proud to be leading the way in creating an environment where students are free to focus on their futures,” Weaver added.
The ‘Free to Focus SC’ initiative will provide updated resources, including guidance for parents, links to Public Service Announcements (PSAs), and other helpful tools. The initiative’s homepage will be regularly updated to support schools in the transition.
