Two Carolina Cities Rank Among Top 10 for Baby Boomers

As the baby boomer generation enters their retirement years, many are contemplating downsizing their homes. This shift is driven by various factors, including the desire to move closer to family, enjoy more favorable weather, or find a home that is easier to maintain and more accessible. According to Opendoor, baby boomers own approximately 32 million homes across the country.

The need for more accessible homes is crucial. Data from the US Census Bureau indicates that only about 40% of US homes have features that are considered “aging-ready.” These features include step-free entryways, as well as bedrooms and full bathrooms on the first floor. Homes lacking these updates can be expensive to renovate.

In response to this need, Opendoor analyzed housing markets to identify the top aging-friendly cities in the US. The criteria focused on the availability of homes with features beneficial to an aging population, such as single-story homes, newly built homes, and accessible layouts with living quarters on the first floor.

Here are the top 10 aging-friendly cities in the US, according to Opendoor data:

  1. San Antonio, TX
  2. Houston, TX
  3. Dallas, TX
  4. Phoenix, AZ
  5. Tucson, AZ
  6. Jacksonville, FL
  7. Charleston, SC
  8. Orlando, FL
  9. Las Vegas, NV
  10. Charlotte, NC

Both Charleston, SC, and Charlotte, NC, represent the Carolinas on this list, which is great news for residents of the Queen City! These cities offer promising options for those considering relocation.

Charleston’s charm is undeniable, though it’s worth noting that its historic downtown homes may not be aging-friendly and could be quite expensive. Nonetheless, for those who can manage the heat and humidity, Charleston remains an attractive option.

With these insights, baby boomers can make informed decisions about downsizing and finding a home that meets their needs in their golden years.
