The Journey of a Dream

The dream of establishing Tatanka Bison Ranch began in South Africa. The founder’s passion for farming, coupled with a fascination for African elephants—symbols of strength and unity—sparked a lifelong interest. After retiring from the corporate world in 2014, the search for the perfect property led to the discovery of a neglected yet breathtaking 215-acre piece of land in York County, SC. Despite the initial lack of infrastructure, the natural beauty and potential of the land were undeniable.

The Birth of a Bison Herd

A pivotal moment occurred while traveling through North Carolina, where a herd of bison was spotted alongside the highway. Intrigued, the founder delved into the history of bison in the Carolinas and learned that these magnificent creatures roamed the region over 200 years ago. Six months of dedicated research and hard work later, the first 18 bison arrived at the ranch in late 2015. By the spring of 2016, the ranch celebrated the birth of its first calves, and the herd has since grown to over 40 bison.

A Matriarchal Society

Bison, much like elephants, live in matriarchal societies where the females (cows) lead and protect the group. This unity and protectiveness have enabled bison to survive for tens of thousands of years. The ranch embraces and shares this fascinating aspect of bison life with visitors, emphasizing the deep spiritual connection and historical significance of these animals.
